Community Service Report

by Cathy Jones, Community Service Chairwoman

Posted September 8, 2007

During the year, we try to hold four blood drives. Our third one for this year was held on September 5th. A few of the regular donors arrived early and asked where everyone was. When they normally arrive, there is usually a line; this time there was not. There were a couple of hours where we actually had no donors at all, but after the lunch hour, the pace really picked up. By the time we finished the drive at 3:15, their final results were:

24 Units Collected
3 Donors Deferred
4 2 RBC
31 Total Products

Thank you to everyone who donated. Each donor received a Pittsburgh Penguin T-shirt in addition to their name being added to a drawing for 2 Pirate tickets. Thank you again and we hope to see everyone in November which will probably be pumpkin pie time.

June 19 Blood Drive Report

by Cathy Jones, Community Service Chairwoman

Posted July 10, 2007

Thank you to everyone who donated blood on Tuesday, June 19, 2007. I was afraid the turnout would be low due to the last minute change in sites. It was moved from the C.I. Trailer to the Career Development Trailer and as always, you donors came through. The final results were as follows:

34 units collected, 2 donors deferred, 13 - 2RBC, Total Units = 59

Each donor that was interested received a voucher for two free tickets to a private concert in The Great Hall at Heinz Field featuring B.E. Taylor on July 14th. I hope you all enjoy yourselves.

The next Blood Drive should be in September and something was mentioned about Penguin Tickets. Watch for more information as it becomes available. Remember, when you come to donate, you must have I.D. The following are acceptable forms of I.D.: driver's license, employee badge or Central Blood Bank card.

by Joseph Reed, Recording Secretary

Posted February 26, 2007

The following news and photo were contributed by Local 1219 member Andy Wanca:

On December 29, 2006, an extremely grateful Ronald Watkins came to our union hall with his Physical Therapist (seen below). They came to pick up the $1034.23 collected for Ron and his family at the gates of E.T. (Ron's U.S. Steel medical coverage terminated with the end of 2006). Ron is determined to return to work and works hard in therapy toward that goal.

In Review: November Blood Drive, Christmas Party, Adopt a Child Christmas Gate Collection

by Cathy Jones, Community Service Chairwoman

Posted December 20, 2006

The blood drive for November was held Thursday, November 22nd, the day before Thanksgiving. It was slow going at first but picked up as the day went on. Each donor received a 2007 calendar from the Blood Bank. Inside the calendar, for each month, was a picture and a brief description of how your gift of life helped a particular person. Every donor also was signed up for a pumpkin pie raffle. A winner was drawn each hour. The report card for the blood drive results were: 38 units collected, 3 donors deferred, 11 2RBC = 22 = a total of 49 total products. Thank you to everyone who participated. Happy Holidays and hope to see you next blood drive.

-----------------------------------

Saturday, December 9th a Christmas party was held for the children. From where I was standing, I think the kids has a pretty good time. They received a stocking which was stuffed full of all types of goodies, a snow globe and an activity book. There was also face painting which was very popular and made for some very nice art work on the kids. Creative balloon making people were also kept busy by the children's requests to make different things. Our Union Brother Dan Pinner put on a magic show that everybody truly enjoyed. There was a snowman walking around and suddenly Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer would show up next to him. But the highlight of course was the big guy himself, Santa Claus. Everyone was in line to get their picture taken with him. There was a sandwich and snack plus drinks from Chef Lisa and her staff. The final event of the day was the drawing of the door prizes which every winner seemed to be very pleased with. Everybody seemed to enjoy themselves again this year. We hope to see everybody again next year. Happy Holidays!

The gate collection held on Wednesday, December 13, 2006 yielded the following:

Total Collected: $1,690
Less 2 Checks          50     (checks were made payable to Debra House and Rankin
                                                    Christian Center for $25 each)
Total                  $1,640

The cash was redeemed at Wal-Mart for 82 $20 gift cards. The cards were then divided between Debra House and Rankin Christian Center.

Double Red Blood Cell Donations

by Cathy Jones, Community Service Chairwoman

Posted October 19, 2006

In my blood drive reports, I have been asked what 2RBC means. Here is a brief breakdown.

Double Red Blood Cell (2RBC) Donations

The Central Blood Bank knows the products the hospitals need and they tailor your donation to meet those daily demands. When customizing your donation, they consider factors such as your blood type and how many times a year you donate. With whole blood, separation in a laboratory requires more steps. However, donations done by machines are separated at bedside and are ready for transfusion. This system separates and collects red blood cells, then safely returns remaining blood components back to you. This process is safe and reliable and also returns saline to replace fluid volume and aid in hydration.

Special Requirements for 2RBC Donations

Male: Minimum 130 lbs. and 5' 1" tall

Female: Minimum 150 lbs. and 5' 5" tall

Iron Level: Both men and women must have a 40% or higher hematocrit

Donation Interval: 112 days or 16 weeks (versus 56 days or 8 weeks for whole blood donations)

Blood drive, United Way Week recap

by Cathy Jones, Community Service Chairwoman

Posted September 21, 2006

On Wednesday, September 6, we held a blood drive at the C.I. trailer. The turnout started slowly but picked up later during the morning. Every donor received a voucher for the Pirates game held on Sunday, September 17 against the Mets. We also held an hourly drawing for Penguins pre-season tickets for a game to be played at the end of September. Those who were lucky enough to win will receive their tickets by mail. The result of the blood drive was 39 units collected -3, donors deferred -4, 2 RBC = 46 total products. I would like to thank everyone for taking time out of their busy day to give this gift of life.

The week of September 11-15 was United Way Week. The Reps were kept very busy talking to the work force to get some to re-sign and others to get on board and sign up for the first time. The tent was a very active place with the selling of 50/50 tickets and the Chinese raffle. The food side was also very busy. They sold out of food every day but one. The weather was rainy for two days but we still had a fair turnout. The only disappointment we had for the week was that we had to cancel the Car, Truck and Bike Show due to lack of participation. The United Way Reps would like to thank everyone who helped us have another successful year.

Blood drive, United Way Week coming in September

by Cathy Jones, Community Service Chairwoman

Posted September 1, 2006

We had a blood drive in June which was a success. A total of 37 units were collected and four donors were deferred. 8 - 2 RBC = 4 equals a total of 49 units. Every hour a pair of Pirates tickets was given to a given to a donor by drawing. Each donor also received a t-shirt.

In August we have a hoagie sale to kick off the United Way Week which is in September. The final numbers on the hoagie sale are not yet available.

The month of September will be busy. September 6 we will have another blood drive at the BOP/CI trailer from 7 AM to 3 PM. A voucher will be given to each donor for Pirate tickets for the September 17 game against the Mets. There will also be a drawing held every hour for Penguin tickets. September 8 the United Way Solicitors will have their training. They will receive their information, listen to a United Way Speaker from one of the agencies they represent, and learn more about the United Way. United Way Week is September 11-15 near the Career Development trailer. This is a very busy week but very enjoyable at the United Way tent. We will have games, raffles, 50/50 tickets and most important, food! We are also having a car, bike and truck cruise again this year. We expect this to be a big success as the past years have been.
